MSE Halloween Trivia Night
Knoxville, TN, October 23, 2025

The MSE department hosted its seventh(?) MSE Halloween Trivia Night.

The event is a community-building opportunity that includes undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty, alumni and friends of the MSE department.

The fearless leader in this endeavor was our academic advisor for the MSE department, Laurel Harrison. Thank you, Laurel!

The event was a potluck supplemented by pizza.

We had a good turnout.

Costumes were encouraged. (By the way, thanks to Prof. Hahn Choo for serving as the photographer for the event.)

Dr. Bernadette Cladek brought the angelic Olive.

We had good participation from our MSE freshmen, who had just finished an EF exam earlier in the day. (We owe a thanks to Mary Kocak for promoting the event to the MSE freshmen!)

Metallurgists from Middle Earth were also in attendance.

I think that's John H. masquerading as Gandalf.

Of course, black is an appropriate color for Halloween.

Dr. Matthew Cothrine teamed up with our juniors for a pirate-themed team. This photos doesn't do justice to the costumes of Tavin and Findley.

Fortunately, Prof. Choo was a thorough photographer.

Four of our amazing seniors as Artemis, Apollo, Athena & Aphrodite. (You can test your knowledge of Greek mythology by matching the names to the costumes.)

This team was composed of underclassmen in Prof. Choo's MSE Professional Seminar class. Thank you, Prof. Choo for rallying the troops.

As usual, the students working in the Scintillation Materials Research Center had team-themed costume. This year they were a coven of witches.

Trivia Champions: The Revenge, a merry band of pirates, featuring among the crew MSE juniors, Luke S., Annika, Luke W., Findley, Tavin, captained by the infamous Dr. Matthew Cothrine and his better half, Melissa.

The bedeviling scallywags showed off their fierce scowls.

In second place, the Freshmen, featuring Julia, Amelia, Will, DJ & Hudson.

In third place, The Cryptids, featuring Prof. Keffer, Ronan, Jeremy from Nuclear Eng'g, and three esteemed alumni from the MSE department Matthew Valderrama (MSE BS 2023), Emma Howard (MSE BS 2024) and Dr. Bernadette Cladek (MSE PhD 2020).

Thanks to the Laurel and the MSE Ambassadors for making the event happen!
Until next year!
