Award Winning MSE Undergraduates at TMS
San Diego, CA, March 15-19, 2026




A contingent of student and faculty members of the UTK MSE community attended the 2026 TMS meeting.


MSE senior Jocelyn Hess presented her research on paper fiber-polypropylene composites for automotives and won first place in the Materials Processing and Manufacturing Division (MPMD) Undergrad Poster Contest for the second year in a row. Jocelyn is advised by Prof. David Harper in the Center for Renewable Carbon at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture.


MSE sophomore Callie Jee presented her research on paper fiber-polylactic acid composites for biodegradable single-use food packaging and won first place in the Extration and Processing Division Undergrad Poster Contest. Callie is advised by Prof. David Harper in the Center for Renewable Carbon at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture.


MSE senior Megan Gillespie presented her research on scintillators and won first place in the Functional Materials Division Undergrad Poster Contest. Megan is advised by Prof. Mariya Zhuravleva in the UTK MSE department. This is the fourth year in a row that the Functional Materials Division competition has been won by an undergraduate in the MSE department (2023 - Marlena Alexander; 2024 - Jakob Scroggins; 2025 - Marlena Alexander.)
