Award Winning MSE Undergraduates at TMS
Las Vegas, NV, March 23-27, 2025

A contingent of student and faculty members of the UTK MSE community attended the 2025 TMS meeting.

The team of MSE undergraduates (left to right: Megan Gillespie, Jakob Scroggins, Jocelyn Hess & Fabriana Prawiranata) competed in the Materials Bowl competition, where they made it to the final round and took home 5th place out of 17 teams.

MSE junior Jocelyn Hess presented her research on paper fiber-polypropylene composites for automotives and won first place in the Materials Processing and Manufacturing Division (MPMD) Undergrad Poster Contest. Jocelyn is advised by Prof. David Harper in the Center for Renewable Carbon at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture.

MSE junior Marlena Alexander presented her research on high entropy ceramics and won first place in the Functional Materials Division Undergrad Poster Contest. Marlena is advised by Prof. Mariya Zhuravleva in the UTK MSE department. This is the second time Marlena has won this competition. She also won it in 2023. (UTK MSE senior Jakob Scroggins won this competition in 2024, meaning that UTK MSE undergraduates have won the competition three years in a row.)
