MSE Students Compete in Domesday
Cleveland, Ohio, October 1, 2024

A team of four MSE juniors and seniors traveled to the 2024 IMAT (International Materials, Applications & Technologies) Conference to participate in the Domesday Competition sponsored by ASM International. The team consisted of (from left to right) Marlena Alexander, Jakob Scroggins, Fabriana Prawiranata & Megan Gillespie. The faculty advisor was Prof. Claudia Rawn.

This year, the geodesic dome, fondly named Li'l Domey IV, was created out of Selective Laser Melting 316L stainless steel joints for strength and pultruded carbon fiber tubing for the rods. The choice of material for the rod was made to reduce density, as the competition scoring is normalized by the weight of the dome. After the competition, Fabriana shows off the deformed but intact dome.

The team received the "Best Aesthetics Award" in the competition. They were happy to share the credit for their triumph with the group of faculty and staff at the University of Tennessee who helped them bring this project to fruition. Their acknowledgements on the poster read, "The team thanks Dr. Jerry Egeland for his help throughout the fabrication of the dome. We also thank Dr. David Harper for his design insights, Caleb Campbell and Dr. Bradley Jared for assistance printing, as well as Dr. Phillip Rack and the Center for Materials Processing for their support. Lastly, a special thanks to Prof. Mary Kocak."

The team celebrated their award and were joined by MSE junior, Jocelyn Hess, (attending IMAT to receive her own award), with dinner at the Marble Room. Congratulations to all these outstanding MSE students.
