Summer Research Spotlight: Jocelyn Hess @ the German Aerospace Center Cologne, Germany, Summer, 2024 MSE junior, Jocelyn Hess, spent the summer participating in an internship through the DAAD RISE Germany program at the German Aerospace Center in Cologne, Germany in the Institute of Materials Physics in Space. She worked with Juan Carlos Arañó Romero under Dr. Matthias Sperl to develop a glass-fiber reinforced ceramic composite made with simulated lunar regolith. The goal of the project was to determine the viability of lunar regolith as a building material on the moon. Jocelyn's work focused on the sintering process of the simulant. She also worked on the preliminary stages of a composite manufacturing process to find correlations of input parameters with output of simulant and fibers. Jocelyn gave a talk on her research at the 2024 DAAD RISE Germany Annual Meeting entitled "Study on Construction Materials for Lunar Settlements". As part of the summer experience, Jocelyn really enjoyed the ability to travel. She says, "One of my favorite trips was to Munich, a city famous for its Bavarian culture. I got to go to Hofbräuhaus and go hiking in the Bavarian alps around the Eibsee lake. I also loved exploring the city of Cologne, like hearing the pipe organ in Cologne Cathedral and sailing down the Rhine River." More photos on the Keffer research group site. |
