Emmaline Howard, a graduate of the Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) Department at the University of Tennessee (B.S., 2024) has received a scholarship to participate in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) to spend a year in Germany. "The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals is a fellowship that annually provides 75 American and 75 German young professionals the opportunity to spend one year in each other's countries, studying, interning, and living with hosts on a cultural immersion program. U.S. Participants of the program act as 'young ambassadors' of the United States in Germany and represent the diversity of the U.S." "Upon arriving at D.C. on July 24th participants receive onboarding information and meet the other 75 members of the 41st cohort. Then on July 26th, the cohort takes a plane to Berlin where they receive their visas. After which, a two month period of language intensive training takes place in partnership with Carl Duisberg Language Center. Then they are provided the opportunity to take one semester of classes in their academic or career field at a university, a technical school, or a professional school. Both the intensive language course and semester of classes costs are covered by the program. During the semester it is the participants job to find an internship which will start between February or March. During the whole year the program helps the cohort by providing housing through either families, dorms, or apartments." While at the University of Tennessee, Emma distinguished herself through undergraduate research. At different times, she worked in the research groups of both Prof. Gobet Advincula and Prof. David Harper. She has co-authored one paper and presented her work at SPE ANTEC (2024).
