Award Winning MSE Undergraduates at TMS
Orlando, Florida, March 3-5, 2024

A group of undergraduate students and one graduate student from the Materials Science & Engineering department at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville traveled to the TMS meeting in Orlando, Florida to participate in various competitions and showcase their research. The team of (from left to right) Jakob Scroggins (MSE junior), Megan Gillespie (MSE sophomore), Fabriana Prawiranata (MSE junior) and Raymond Wysmierski (MSE Master's student) claimed third place out of seventeen teams in the Materials Bowl science trivia challenge.

Jakob Scroggins presented a poster describing his research performed at the Center for Renewable Carbon in the UT Institute of Agriculture. His work involves converting lignin, a renewable feedstock, into a nanostructured carbon electrode used for energy storage in supercapacitors. His co-authors include his research mentor, Prof. David Harper in the CRC, Dr. Lu Yu at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (a MSE & CRC alumna; PhD, 2022) and Prof. David Keffer in MSE.

Jakob's poster was awarded first place in the Functional Materials Division Undergraduate Poster Competition. It was a banner week for Jakob who was already scheduled to attend the awards ceremony for receiving the 2023 TMS Kaufman CALPHAD Scholarship.

Congratulations to all the amazing MSE students for their well-deserved recognitions at TMS.
